Just a Fool’s Spring

According to the calendar, spring officially begins March 20th! At the time I am writing this, it really looks like a spring day. Monday afternoon when I came home from town, temperatures were pushing 70 degrees. We’ve had more than a few customers say, “Spring is coming” or “Spring is here.” Don’t be fooled, folks! If you’ve lived in Tennessee as long as I have, then you know … we’ve only had one winter so far. We’re in the first Fool’s Spring.

Even Punxsutawney Phil says there are 6 more weeks. And Tennessee usually breaks the rules and goes further than that.

As far as I know, no one to my knowledge, has seen Daffodils, crocuses, tulips, or daisies in bloom. Though, I’ve seen a few bulbs peeking out. Once these flowers burst into life adding color to the landscape, we can safely say Spring is coming.

Magnolias and Dogwoods will also leap into action and then we are official. These trees produce a wonderful scent that signals the arrival of spring. Of course, even in Spring, the weather can suddenly change and we get a late freeze, which can and often does happen, after all, we live in Tennessee, and Easter, even in April can be cold, wet and messy.

Now, how about a little weather lore and some old adages?

If you find no dew on the grass early in the morning, it will rain within 24 hours. Over a period of time, this has been proven true more times than not. My uncle told me about it many years ago, but, of course, sometimes you have to be outside before sunrise to check it! And many times, I just slide my hand over the gate, just to see!

An old saying states; “Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning, red sky at night, sailors delight,” which is another prediction for stormy weather.

“Turkey track” clouds in the sky forecast rain within three days.

Purple sage blooming predicts rain. And last but not least, according to folklore, sighting a robin, red-winged blackbird, or our amazing Hummingbirds are said to be a sure signs that spring is truly here. That old adage does seem to be true!

We at the Shoppes are feeling the tug of Spring. In truth, Spring is creeping into the Shoppes. First of course we have Valentines, so we have hearts, décor and some fun gifts to show the love – to others or yourself! But we are also seeing spring bouquets, bunnies, carrots and a few sprouting mushrooms.

So as you are waiting for your daffodils to poke their heads up looking for sunshine, come by and see us to get some indoor Spring vibes.

We appreciate you,

Bev
