Fall is in the Air

We are beginning to experience our first chilly mornings. Breathing in the cool air sparks my longing for autumn…sweaters, scarves, and cider, fires, football games, and warm soup…crunching leaves and crisp air.

It’s now September, so it’s time to start decorating for fall. The ideal time depends on your climate and how long you want to enjoy your decorations, but many consider the end of summer holidays or the first crisp mornings as a good trigger to begin.

To decorate for fall, incorporate natural elements like pumpkins, gourds, and leaves; add warm textures with throw blankets and pillows; use fall foliage and candles to evoke the season; and bring the outdoors in with wreaths and natural accents like acorns and pinecones. You can add depth by using amber glass accents and seasonal artwork, and by making the most of seasonal colors like orange, gold, and red.

Fall is all about embracing nature. Any natural elements, along with pumpkins, gourds, and fall mums to decorate entryways, steps, and other areas of your home, work perfectly.

Incorporate fall foliage, such as eucalyptus, or arrange fall stems in a bucket or rustic container. Add pinecones, acorns, or even dried flowers for a natural, earthy feel. For an extra rustic touch, place corn stalks on your front porch to enhance the seasonal look. Ya don’t have to run out to buy all these natural elements. Check your backyard! Nothing? Check your neighbors.

Hang an autumnal wreath on your front door to give a warm, seasonal welcome.

Inside the home, add chunky knit or fur throw blankets to couches and chairs to increase the cozy factor. Those textured pillows with fall-appropriate colors and textures, like earth tones, will complement your existing decor.

Many people change out their artwork to reflect the season, bringing in images of harvest, wagons, fields, and even scarecrows. You can’t go wrong bringing in colors like orange, yellow, gold, and red through flowers, artwork, or decorative accents.

Use amber glass vases, especially for flower arrangements or candle holders, to add a warm, autumnal glow.

And, of course, candles are a must. Those warm scents of cider, apples, and pumpkins. And the glow of real or electric candles creates a cozy and festive atmosphere.

When it comes to fall decor, I like to go big or go home! It can be tricky to incorporate seasonal decorations that seamlessly fit with the style of your home, so just make a big impact.

One option, in place of sprinkling little items throughout your home, is creating a big display scene in one area – like the big installations that department stores would do for the holidays. Similar to Christmas, where we have a corner dedicated to a large Christmas Tree, dedicate one area and go wild with fall.

Use faux pumpkins that are affordable, lightweight, and last year after year. Large art and a large statement piece can make a true impact. A statement piece can be a large lantern or two with fall foliage and candles. I always use timer candles, so they come on automatically.

I also like to use the same large-scale pumpkin setup outside for a fall decor display by my front door. Paired with baskets of mums and a simple seasonal wreath, the pumpkins create the quintessential fall porch. Despite being exposed to the elements, these faux pumpkins have held up well on my open front porch. Don’t be afraid to use cream or blue pumpkins in your display. They add a nice fall touch. When it’s Halloween, switch the cream and blue to black and you’re ready to spook.
